The “Louisiana Diabetes Summit: Meeting our challenge” was held on April 24 in Baton Rouge at the C.B. Pennington Conference Center. Dr. Stephen Walker, CNSI Chief Medical Officer (CMO), moderated the event. The EHCL chose this topic because of its immediate concern to the health of Louisiana residents. Raising awareness, promoting prevention, and ensuring that diabetes patients get the best possible care are crucial to the health and wellbeing of Louisiana.

“Meeting Our Challenge brought great awareness to an audience that included community leaders, providers, payers and purchasers of healthcare, ” said Stephen Walker, MD, CNSI CMO. “Speakers included experts that are making a difference through prevention and early detection to reduce risk of complications.” Walker said that Lou Brock, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, came to the Summit to speak on behalf of others, like himself, who have Type 2 diabetes. Of diabetes, Brock said, “I’m in it, and I didn’t want to be in it. I still don’t want to be in it.”  But, said Brock, who works now to spread awareness of the disease, he doesn’t let it dominate his life. “Stay inside the bounds, inside the numbers, ” he said.  The Summit reached out to a lot of people who will be able to make a difference. The Diabetes Summit agenda included:Stephen B.
